The venues for the 2002 Olympic Games are located in Salt Lake City itself as well as in the nearby locations of Ogden, Park City, Heber City, West Valley City and Provo. Deer Valley Resort spans four mountains: Empire Canyon, Flagstaff,
Bald and Bald Eagle. This venue was constructed to have minimum impact
on surrounding wildlife including elk, mountain lions, mule deer, black
bear and moose. The elevation of the summit is 9570 feet (2917 meters)
making this the highest Olympic venue. Deer Valley will be host to Alpine
skiing, Freestyle Moguls and Aerial events.

The E Center is located at West Valley City, a Salt Lake City suburb,
and home to the Utah Grizzlies. This venue will host Men's and Women's
Ice Hockey Games.

The Ice Sheet at Ogden is located on the campus of Weber State University,
north of Salt Lake City, in the City of Ogden. This venue will host
all the Curling events of these Olympic Games.

The Main Media Centre is located at the Salt Palace Convention
Center in downtown. This facility will be a base of operations for 9,000

The Olympic Medals Plaza is an open-air construction expected to hold
24 000 spectators. For 16 nights medals will be presented to the winning

Park City Mountain Resort is one of the most acclaimed ski resorts
anywhere, and Utah's capital of fun. Park City will hold the Giant Slalom
and the spectacular Snowboarding events. This is only the second Olympics
in which Snowboarding will be featured as a medal event (having premiered
in the 1998 Nagano Games).

Peaks Ice Arena, in the University town of Provo, is located southeast
from Salt Lake on I-15. This brand new facility will be a venue for
one of the most exalted events of the Winter Olympics - Ice Hockey.
This facility will be able to hold about 8000 spectators.

Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium will host the most extravagant of the
Olympic celebrations, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The Opening
Ceremonies will see 2,345 athletes and officials from 80 nations march
together while the world watches. Sixteen days of competition will end
with the passing of the Olympic torch to Italy, host of the 2006 Winter
Olympic Games.

The Salt Lake Ice Center is located downtown. It will be the the
site of the perennial Olympic favorite - Figure Skating, Short Track
Speed Skating, and Ice Hockey. This facility is six stories high, covers
10 acres (4 hectares), and can accommodate more than 15,000 spectators.

The Snowbasin Ski Area is east of Ogden, located in the Wasatch-Cache
National Forest. This new venue has been specially designed for the
Olympics and was the only accessible location in the Wasatch Mountains
appropriate for the Downhill, Super G and Combined Downhill skiing events.
Snowbasin is the furthest venue from the Olympic Village, 54 mi (87km) away.

Soldier Hollow is located in Heber City. This venue will host Cross
Country Skiing, Biathlon and Nordic Combined Events. This venue, on
the eastern edge of Wasatch Mountain State Park, was previously cleared
for grazing. When construction of the new Olympic venues began one aim
was to restore the land to its original state. The trails have been
designed to minimize human impact, irrigation has been diverted and
native grasses and trees have been planted throughout the area. This
is intended to reclaim wetland and reduce erosion caused by construction.

Utah Olympic Park is a 386 acre (156-hectare) complex located south
of Snowbasin. This area is a habitat for wildlife: small mammals, birds,
deer and elk. The annual snowfall of 7.5 meters (295 inches) makes it
perfect to host Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Skeleton, Bobsleigh and
Luge events. Facilities include a regulation Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge
track and five regulation jumps.

The Utah Olympic Oval at Kearns, on the outskirts of Greater Salt
Lake, will host Speed Skating. This 'state of the art facility' will
be an experience in itself. Besides being a unique feat of architecture
the builders have recycled steel, aluminum, cardboard, concrete, bricks
and asphalt, and other construction materials.
